City council has declared this week Canadian Finals Rodeo Week in Swift Current, as the final event of this years Canadian Cowboys Association makes its way to the city.

The Canadian Cowboys Association Finals Rodeo takes place from October 17 to 20 at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.

This being the third year that the event has been hosted in Swift Current, it is also planned to be hosted in the city for the next two years as well.

The competition, which will host five performances from each of the seven events, will see championship saddles, trophies, and championship belt buckles handed out to the best rodeo performers in the country.

As the city proclaimed the week at city council last Tuesday, some speakers involved with the rodeo presented information about the rodeo to the council.

Janae Wilson, a junior barrel racer with the Canadian Cowboys Association, shed some light on the process involved with setting up the event.

"There is a considerable amount of work involved in marketing, advertising, promoting, sponsoring, producing, and getting the Credit Union iPlex converted from a hockey rink into a rodeo arena, all in a short time frame, and then turning the facility back into a hockey rink in two days."

Wilson also said that the event has received an average attendance of 15,000 people in past years, and that the Canadian Cowboys Association expected either equal or stronger attendance than previous years.

Another presenter at city council was Bob Hope, a member of the Canadian Cowboys Association Finals Rodeo Committee, said that there would be a program to provide more information to those who may be unfamiliar to rodeos.

"The announcer and usually the rodeo clowns, they present this rodeo 101, but it's to educate them about the animals, the use of the animals, and why it's all safe for the animals."

Accompanying the rodeo, there will also be a trade show taking place in the curling area at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex from October 18 to 20.

Wrapping up the rodeo, a cabaret will be taking place in the Stockade at Kinetic Park, with musician Garrett Gregory performing.
