A multitude of non-profit organizations in Swift Current have been approved by city council to share $107,281 from the 2018-19 Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grants Program.

The City approved funding of some sort for 56 of the 59 applications they received for organizations within the community that delivery sport, culture, and recreation.

Dean Robson, the general manager of community services for the City of Swift Current, said they tend to try and help out new groups when possible.

"Often if we have new groups we target them," he said after city council Monday afternoon. "We've had sledge hockey, and stuff comes on in the last couple of years so that we would target them. So they might get a bigger kick in the first couple of years then just level off like everybody else."

Swift Current receives a set amount of money yearly based on their population from Saskatchewan Lotteries for the grant program.

"It's a great program," Robson stated. "As councillor Toles mentioned when you buy a lottery ticket you got a buck or two going [towards the Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grants Program] every time. Even though you don't personally win, the province, communities, and the groups win, so that's a key factor."

Community services admin reviewed the applications put forth by February 14 to make sure that they meet the Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grants Program criteria as well as the City's criteria.

Following that, the applications move forward to Recreation and Parks Board for comment before moving onto council for approval which was given on a rare Monday afternoon meeting.

The funding will help programs for the next year (from April 1 this year until March 31, 2019).
