It will be about a year before the Saskatchewan New Democrats chose a new, permanent leader.

The party's provincial council announced yesterday that a leadership convention will be held in February or March of 2013, with the exact date and the official start of the leadership race to be announced in the coming weeks.

The party is choosing a new leader to replace Dwain Lingenfelter, who resigned after he lost in his riding, and the party won just nine seats in the last Provincial Election in November.

Of the nine NDP MLAs in Saskatchewan, five of them have expressed an interest in running for the leadership. Current acting leader John Nilson has said he will not run for the permanent job.
