The 1989 Swift Current Broncos

The Swift Current Broncos will be a big part of the first class of inductees into the new Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame.

The list includes Broncos legend Bryan Trottier and the Memorial Cup winning 1989 Broncos.

"The fact that the Hall of Fame will be in Swift Current and this is the first class, I think to be recognized as one of the best teams ever in junior in Saskatchewan is a great honour," said member of the '89 Broncos Tim Tisdale.

Tisdale, who scored the winning goal in the Memorial Cup, talked about what made the team special.

"Just how offensive minded that hockey club was," Tisdale said. "It was fun to watch. We didn't care if we won 6-5 or 7-6. Goals against really were irrelevant to that group. It was a team build on offence only, and the fans loved it."

Chair of the selection committee Jack Brodsky talked about the criteria they used in making their selection.

"The success that a team had," Brodsky said. "With a player in some cases it goes beyond their contributions as a player but maybe their contribution to society... and the way they represented our province."

"We had some good honest discussion between some people who really know what they're talking about."

While some of the initial names seem like a slam dunk, it wasn't an easy process.

"You should see the list of the guys that we didn't get in," Brodsky said. "We've got a little catching up to do."

Brodsky is also the owner of the Saskatoon Blades and chuckled about having a hard time inducting the Broncos team that beat his Blades in the '89 Memorial Cup.

“You know I joked about that quite a bit but not at all,” Brodsky said. “That was an outstanding team and nothing but respect to the Swift Current Broncos and what they were able to accomplish. It still hurts me a little bit to think about that overtime goal.”

Saskatoon hosts the Memorial Cup again in 2013.

The physical Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame will be housed upstairs at the Credit Union iPlex.

"It will be great for the people here in Swift to go and see it whenever they want. Over time things are always forgotten, but you will be able to go in and look at the names. I'm sure there will be a lot on Gordie Howe."

The inductees include legends like Gordie Howe, Glenn Hall Johnny Bower and the Bentley Brothers.

There will be a banquet in their honour on July 28th in Swift Current, and plans are in motion to have the physical Hall of Fame open in time for the event. The Blades will honour the inductees during their game on January 21rst.
