Saskatchewan Stars on Ice in Gull Lake

Saskatchewan Stars on Ice Figure Skating Show comes to the Gull Lake Rec Complex tomorrow night at 6pm.

President of the Gull lake Skating Club, Kim Holizki, has been applying to host the show for the last four years and said, "I was finally granted it this year, so we're pretty excited to be hosting it."

Featuring provincial champions, Western Canadian and Canadian competitors, Saskatchewan High Performance Team and skaters from local and regional clubs, Holizki confirmed, "There's a total of 32 skaters from across the province as well as a pair from Alberta that will be performing tomorrow night."

"Because this is Saskatchewan's top skaters," she said, "they do this bursary show every year following the Jean Norman competition which takes place in Moose Jaw this weekend. They select four communities, starting with the Jean Norman show on Saturday night and then they do three other communities around the province."

Close to finalizing preparations for the event, they're all set for tomorrow.

"We've had to find ice time, we'll have to decorate, we have to supply supper for all the skaters, so we'll be doing a potluck supper for them as well as finding billets. To host 32 skaters, it will take quite a few volunteers to look after them all."

All proceeds from the Bursary Show go directly to develop Skate Canada Saskatchewan.

"It's really just to spotlight the sport itself and to hopefully encourage more skaters."

In her 7th year as a board member, Kim added, "Our numbers out here at our club have doubled since I've been a member. I would say our numbers have gone from about 25 and now we're currently sitting at just over 40 members."

Even if you're not a diehard figure skating fan, Holizki said, "I think it would be well worth coming out. It's a really high calibre of skating. It'll be a great show, great family entertainment."

Admission for adults will be $8, seniors $5, students 18 and under $3, and children under 6 come free.
