Swift Current Mayor Jerrod Schafer

Swift Current's Mayor wants to see all the province's cities work together more as they face the challenges provided by growth.

Jerrod Schafer said the recent CMC meetings were a good opportunity to gather and share information.

"I think the other thing that comes from it is cities need to take a stronger voice in our province," explained Schafer. "Getting together and advocating how important cities are. Everything in urban and rural are important in Saskatchewan, but cities play a very important part in the servicing aspect."

Schafer said he had a chance to compare notes with other mayors at the meetings.

"Dealing with growth, more than anything, is the challenge that's there and working through those issues," said Schafer. "Also, communities dealing with health care issues and recreation, all of the things we're worried about, and of course, infrastructure is priority number one as always."

Schafer noted that 75% of the GDP in Saskatchewan is coming from urban centres and it's important to work together in dealing with that growth.

He added annexation issues aren't unique to Swift Current as Regina, Yorkton, Weyburn and others are facing similar issues.
