The all-time heat record for August in Swift Current was broken on the weekend, following a week of sweltering temperatures.

The mercury rose to 40.1 C on Saturday edging the previous mark of 40.0 C set a day earlier. The Friday high broke the all-time August record of 38.9 C set back on August 5, 1961, August 6, 1949, and August 25, 1920.

Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environmental Canada, said she's seen these kind of temperatures before, but that was when she worked in the Okanagans.

"Two sort of back-to-back days with those types of records are really significant and plus (they were) old records," she said.

Swift Current wasn't the warmest place in the province on either day as Maple Creek and Assiniboia reached 40.1 C on Friday and Moose Jaw got to 42.3 C on Saturday.

Smoke from wildfires in Alberta and B.C. played a role in the temperature by creating a blanket-like effect.

"Probably at least a degree or two I would think," Lang said about the records. "Just that we saw the thicker smoke the temperatures were quite a bit different. I think we would have seen another degree or two had the smoke not been there."

Wednesday is expected to be this week's high at 31 C.

Note: It was previously reported that Friday's daytime high of 40.0 C was the warmest it's ever been in Swift Current on record; that information was incorrect, as it was only an August record.
