The Saskatchewan Government and General Employees’ Union isn’t a fan of news that private retailers will be selling marijuana come legalization.

Chair of SGEU’s retail/regulatory bargaining committee, Bob Stadnichuk, said the government is missing out on revenue that could go to education and enforcement programs regarding cannabis use as well as other services.

Earlier we heard SLGA’s Gene Makowsky say there would be a substantial cost associated with the province running marijuana distribution.

But Stadnichuk questioned the decision not to have revenue go to the province, asking “how can a government that has put out six deficits in 10 years turn down a revenue stream while cutting our public services?”

SLGA will be regulating the commercial production and distribution.
