SGI is in the process of requesting feedback from Saskatchewan residents regarding e-scooters and their possible use on public roads.

Currently, e-scooters are classified as unlicensed motor vehicles. Under The Traffic Safety Act, unlicensed vehicles are not permitted to be used on any public roads in Saskatchewan, with certain exceptions as Tyler McMurchy, Manager of Media Relations for SGI explains.

"The Traffic And Safety Act doesn't allow unlicensed motor vehicles other than a few specific exceptions for use on public roads. Now municipalities could allow e-scooters on sidewalks or walking trails or used in other places but the Traffic Safety Act which is provincial legislation does not permit those vehicles on public roads."

If a decision was made to allow e-scooters to be legally operated on public roads, The Traffic Safety Act would need to be amended by the provincial government as McMurchy details.

"Essentially that's an amendment to the Traffic Safety Act so it would have to be something that was passed by the provincial government. SGI can't do it arbitrarily but we as administrators of the Traffic Safety Act do on occasion recommend changes to government and the government considers them and decides whether or not they want to accept those recommendations or go their own way."

Any legislative amendment would have to address issues regarding safety, particularly for on-road use, and consider factors like inexperienced drivers, speeds, and equipment.
