Shaunavon's Doctor Recruitment Committee, along with other municipal leaders, Doctor Louwrens, Cypress Health Region Officials and MLA Wayne Elhard met this past Friday in Shaunavon to follow up on doctor recruitment issues for the community.

Jay Meyer from the Committee said long term issues were discussed, “The primary health care model basically allows Doctors and nurses and even nurse practitioners who work in one setting. We're taking a look at expanding the hospital it self. Instead of having just 2 doctors were looking at upwards to 4 doctors just to the on call schedule can be met.”

Meyer adds that they are working very hard to secure physician coverage for Shaunavon, “In the short-term they're still working at getting some doctors to our communitee but there will be come June a Doctor from Swift Current coming down to cover the disruptions were seeing here in May for Tuesdays and Thursdays so that will be covered.”

“We haven't had a whole lot of luck in recruiting anyone new at this point knowing it does take 6 months to 12 months.”, Meyer continued, “This is daily thing we work on as a town with the region to get our health care needs addressed.”

To that end, The Shaunavon Hospital and Care Center will close at five p.m. This evening until eight a.m. Tomorrow morning. There will be no emergency outpatient services or inpatient admissions during that time. In a medical emergency area residents are encouraged to call 9-1-1.
