Six southwest communities are taking part in SGI's 2012 Seat Belt Challenge, and they are encouraging residents there to buckle up every time they step in a vehicle.

Shannon Ell is the Manager of Traffic Safety Promotion for the Crown Insurer, and said the program has helped increase seatbelt use since it first started in 2008, “What we found in the communities we've held it in the past is that every community, except for one and we've done about 39 communities now, has seen an increase in seatbelt use in this process.”

Assiniboia, Eastend, Gravelbourg, Gull Lake, Maple Creek and Shaunavon are taking part in the challenge, and the community with the highest positive change in seatbelt use will win $20,000 toward a road safety project.

The winning community will be announced in the fall.
