Today is Small Business Saturday, and Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault is challenging other mayors to do the same in their cities.

The event is part of the encompassing Small Business Week which will come to a close at the end of today.

Karla Wiens, CEO of the Swift Current And District Chamber of Commerce, said that the week was meant to celebrate local businesses.

"This was started many many many years ago by [Business] Development Bank of Canada, just as a national celebration of our entrepreneurial community. What's happening with small business Saturday, is this is to promote our local entrepreneurs, and shopping local, and it's a proclamation that Mayor Perrault did yesterday, I was able to join him, really just to promote our local entrepreneurs."

Perrault was challenged by Regina Mayor Michael Fougere to declare today Small Business Saturday, and he said that he would like to challenge another mayor to do the same.

"Mayor Fougere and the city of Regina, he proclaimed it, and I was challenged to do the same, and you know, Swift Current, and actually all of the southwest, is built up by an awful lot of entrepreneurs, from farmers to ranchers, from retail salespeople to those in the service industry, we've got a lot of entrepreneurs that bring our small business together and make our community what it is."

After encouraging the residents of Swift Current to shop local, Perrault challenged Moose Jaw Mayor Fraser Tolmie to declare Small Business Saturday in their municipality.
