This weekend's snow covered North Hill Drive in Swift Current Sunday morning

Swift Current, and much of Saskatchewan, is getting its first taste of winter this weekend.

Snow moved in the area Saturday afternoon, and according to Environment Canada, the city received a water equivalent of 12.1 millimetres of precipitation through the day, with more snow falling overnight. An additional five centimetres of snow is expected in the area today.

Drivers are doing what they can to adjust to the snowfall, as streets around Swift Current are very snowy and icy, and highways in the area are also reporting slippery conditions.

Drivers are also asked to take care around the intersection of 10th Ave NE and George Street, as that area is especially icy after a water main break last night.

Meanwhile, higher snowfall amounts are possible in other parts of the province this weekend. Weather warnings are in effect for central and eastern areas of Saskatchewan, with anywhere from 5 to 15cm of snowfall expected in those regions. Strong winds are also expected to create blowing snow and snow drifts on roads.
