The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority handed out $1.1 million in gaming grants for the final quarter of 2011, and that included a significant amount of money in the southwest.

"Swift Current and surrounding area is receiving just over $51,000 in grants," said SLGA spokesman David Morris. That's within the community of Swift Current and some of the neighbouring communities, including Maple Creek, Gull Lake and Shaunavon."

Morris added that two organizations in Swift Current received major contributions among the grants allocated in the city: "The Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation is receiving a grant for $12,400, the local Shrine Club is receiving a significant grant of $10,595... everything from the Archery Club, Southwest Crisis Services, and Special Olympics."

These quarterly grants are based on a percentage of net proceeds raised through licensed charitable gaming activities such as bingos or raffles.
