Yesterday the Swift Current SPCA was specializing in a different type of dogs, cooking up hot dogs for the public.

The local animal shelter held its second annual Dog Days of Summer SPCA Hot Dog BBQ in Market Square in a fundraising effort.

The event is designed to financially boost the shelter, as all funds made from food and drinks sold went back to the organization.

Teresa Cole, development officer with the Swift Current SPCA, said that donations are vital to staying afloat, along with volunteers.

"Unlike some of the non-profits in the city, we don't actually have any core funding that comes from the province or the federal government so every year we have to raise about 80 per cent of our operating budget."

Cole said that the other 20 per cent comes from adoption fees and additional miscellaneous funds including a grant from the municipal government for running the city's dog pound.

The shelter even brought a few cats with them to draw the public in.

Final numbers on profits will be provided as available.
