Following a pipe burst in Swift Current on Monday night, the city has completed a speedy repair.

Mitch Minken, Swift Current's general manager of infrastructure and operations, explained that upon inspection of the pipe located near the corner of Yates Street and 6th Avenue Northeast, an eight-inch hole was discovered.

"It was a pretty clean break, so a large volume of water escaped until we were able to get it turned off a little later, so we had a lot of water on the ground. Of course [it was at the] top of the hill, so [it was] running down the street and so we had a fair amount of water on the road there."

Minken said that safety was a big concern for them due to the possibility of the water freezing. This prompted the use of graders to clear the water and ice buildup.

Reported to the city at 8:30 p.m., the break was fixed by around 2:00 p.m., and restored water to the surrounding area on Tuesday's early afternoon. Minken said that the break was fairly localized and was a relatively quick fix.

For a period of time water was shut off to eight houses and three apartment complexes.

Those properties are now subject to a precautionary drinking water advisory. That advisory is expected to stay in effect for around four or five days according to Minken.

Responding to a report that prior to this break, a leak in the road a short distance away was seen, Minken encouraged anyone who sees something of that sort to report it.

"Usually when we get reports of that, we'll investigate because typically it would mean that we likely have something going on. Certainly, if people notice that, we encourage them to call in as well."

Minken said that cost is not known at this point, but due to it being completed by City of Swift Current employees, he estimated that it would be fairly cost efficient.
