Not even a week after the long-gun registry was shut down by the federal government, it is once again stirring up controversy.

Federal NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair has stated that if he were Prime Minister he would re-instate the registry.

Thunder Creek MLA Lyle Stewart has asked Saskatchewan NDP Leader John Nilson to tell Mulcair to re-think that promise.

"Farmers and ranchers and acreage owners need long guns to defend their property from predators," said Stewart. "Hunters are almost criminalized by this thing and are often in many cases are. It's always been opposed by the majority of people in western Canada."

Nilson is out of the country at a conference and was unavailable for comment. The provincial NDP does not have an official policy on the issue.

The long-gun registry was officially shut down on April 6th.
