As Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is expected to draw new legislation relating to landfills this spring, Swift Current's general manager of infrastructure and operations, Mitch Minken, is optimistic.

There would be a reduction in the number of landfills in the province, with a move towards having regional landfills. It's something that can make things more affordable. There are currently 350 landfills in Saskatchewan.

"One of the big problems that they have is just the decomissioning, because to be decomissioning landfills is a big, onerous task, and a lot of these places can't afford to decomission so they're sort of caught in between; can't even afford to shut down their landfill, and can't afford to operate their landfill, so they're kind of stuck sort of in between where they're just sort of maintaining their landfills and not even using them at this point," said Minken. "It's definitely a challenge for them."

The City is operating the east landfill in Swift Current and has a municipal cell that Minkin said is ready to go if they need it, should they become a regional centre.

Minken pointed to the reginal landfill by Dollard, near Shaunavon, as a sign that things are moving toward having regional locations.

"These smaller places aren't going to be able to follow today's regulations around it, so it's going to end up being a requirement, so a whole bunch of the smaller places are going to get together and help fund one central location and try to maintain that instead of trying to maintain a larger number of them."
