After facing a lot of public criticism, the federal government started unrolling their altered tax changes yesterday.

The biggest confirmed change so far is the Liberal government has announced they are reducing the small business tax rate from 10.5 per cent to 9 per cent by 2019 - a campaign promise made back in 2015.

Last Friday Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault was hopeful the government would go back to the drawing board on their original proposed changes. Following Monday's announcements, Perrault was relieved that the government listened during the 75-day consultation period.

"Very thankful that obviously, the federal government has taken heed to that (consultation period)," he said. "The results from yesterday we saw the small business tax change from 10.5 per cent ultimately being reduced to 9 per cent, that's favourable and good for our small business community."

Perrault also noted that the small business cut will help Swift Current continue to grow, one of the Mayor's very own platforms.

"Anytime there is a cut... It obviously is favourable for growth and favourable for development," he said. "Hopefully this reduced tax on small business will have a positive impact on small businesses as well."

The second change hasn't been fully revealed yet but Bill Morneau said they would make sure they don't affect the transfer of a business to the next generation.

The federal government is expected to continue to announce more changes throughout the week, something Perrault said he'd be watching very closely.
