Swift Current is officially bigger.

Council approved the annexation of new land in the northeast and northwest of the city. They have also rezoned it from agricultural and resource districts to what is called urban reserve.

"A land that is undevelopped and is essentially sitting bare," said Mayor Jerrod Schafer. "Until the city zones it either R1, R2 or R3 it sits as UR... so you don't get other developments going up that may not fit in with your long term plans."

Schafer expects they will use most of the land for residential growth.

"We are in some discussions with the RM about some commerical on the west side of the city," Schafer said. "Depending on what happens in the northeast area there could possibly be some commercial involved, but there are some other landowners that would be involved."

Swift Current bought the land from the RM of Swift Current for five times the municipal taxes, or just over $62,000.
