Across the City of Swift Current yesterday, members of the community were out remembering those who put their lives on the line to ensure we have the ability to celebrating our freedom.

Remembrance Day was celebrated at events spanning the majority of the day, including a service held at Swift Current's Memorial Cenotaph, as well as at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School, and a luncheon at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56.

A marching parade from the Legion to the Memorial Cenotaph took place shortly before a wreath-laying ceremony, Oh Canada, God Save The Queen, and The Last Post were performed.

Before the ceremony held at the Memorial Cenotaph took place, Swift Current Cadets held an honour guard at the monument, keeping watch over it from midnight to 9 a.m. yesterday.

Shortly after the ceremony at the Memorial Cenotaph ended, the Swift Current Comprehensive High School's ceremony began, just in time to hold a moment of silence exactly 100 years to the minute after the Armistice of November 11, 1918, was signed, declaring peace in World War One.

Just three hours after the moment of silence was observed around the world in Commonwealth countries, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56 hosted a luncheon where members of the community broke bread together and reflected on the sacrifices that made being able to converse freely with fellow Canadians possible.

Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault, as well as Everett Hindley, MLA for Swift Current, were in attendance and spoke about this year's Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Perrault said that there was a lot of community participation in this year's ceremonies.

"So nice to see it be very well attended, not just at the cenotaph, but also at the comprehensive high school today, and lots of the service clubs out and about, as well as all the kids, (its) so fitting to see all the cadets, especially those who stood all last night right at the cenotaph, to pay honor, and to pay tribute."

Hindley said that he was honored to take part in the ceremonies, as this was the first Remembrance Day he had participated in since being elected earlier this year.

"Obviously it's a little bit different this time, this is my first opportunity to lay the wreath at the service of the comprehensive high school, and it's truly is an honor to be able to do that on behalf of the provincial government and on behalf of the constituency of Swift Current, so that means a lot, having the opportunity to show our respects to those who have served our country, the men and women who have served our country in the past, who do so now, and will continue to do so into the future"

Shortly after the conclusion of the luncheon, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56 was prepared to once again welcome visitors, this time for a more jovial cause.

The community centre was trying to raise money to continue to offer its services to the public with a 60's themed fundraiser to raise money for the Legion.

The totals raised by the fundraiser are yet to be tabulated.

More information on the fundraiser will be made available by Swift Current Online once they are made available to us.
