Changes look like they're on the way for the federal government's proposed tax changes, and Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault is certainly glad the proposal is getting another look.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau and the federal Liberals have had a ton of backlash from people in Saskatchewan, as well as other areas in Canada. One big point of contention is that it would make it more costly for farms to be handed down to a younger generation.

"The one in particular that was going to heavily penalize a farm from selling to their children as opposed to selling to an outside party - that, quite frankly, was dumb. That's a dumb decision," said Perrault. "And I think that's one in particular they'll have another look at - I'm hopeful they will."

Perrault is also vice chair for SGI, and president of 24/7 Self Storage and Paradise Business Consulting.

"When they first came out there was lots of anger, lots of discussion at coffee row, and there was lots of discussion on national media," said Perrault. "Our business owners were saying, 'this isn't fair - this doesn't make sense.' And I would be one of those that was saying the same thing. So I'm thankful that our federal government is going back, and the finance minister is going to come up with something. The right answer to me is just open up the consultation period."

In Washington, D.C. yesterday Morneau said - regarding changes to the proposal - that it must not hurt farmers.
