Bundle up and plan ahead.

With temperatures dropping into the -30's this week and windchills making it feel colder than -40 at times, it's important to ensure you protect yourself if venturing outdoors. In those temperatures skin can freeze in under 10 minutes.

"With the onset of this cold weather, you have to ensure you have proper clothing and footwear for these extreme temperatures for any outdoor activities and even while travelling," says Jeff Schwan, the Director of Occupational and Public Health with the Cypress Health Region.

In particular, two specific age groups need to take extra precautions when venturing outdoors. "Both kids and seniors are more susceptible to the cold. They can stay outside a lot longer and not feel the effects of the cold as much as others," Schwan says.

As for those longer trips, Schwan encourages all of us to keep a winter survival kit in our vehicle and call ahead to let people know when you are planning a trip. That way they can follow up if you don't make it.
