The cars of the future rolled into Swift Current yesterday afternoon to celebrate National Drive Electric Week for the second-straight year.

Half a dozen electric cars including multiple Teslas and even a homemade electric Porsche car met at Kal Tire for the event. No DeLoreans were sighted.

"This year it was great," VP of Technology for Sun Country Highway James Dennis said. "This is our second event in Swift Current and we had a lot more people show up than what we thought would. We were here, ready, and expecting and like I said there were more people than last year even though the weather wasn't as good. We even have a couple extra vehicles this year."

The event is the third out of four stops in Saskatchewan aimed at educating the public and raising awareness about the positive benefits electric cars have on the environment.

"We have a plug-in hybrid that came all the way from Alberta," Dennis said. "It shows that people are travelling a long distance to show off (their car) because they see Saskatchewan needs more awareness."

Dennis also added that electric cars are great for performance and reliability.

"Pure torque, adrenaline, and very cost effective to run as maintenance is nothing," he said. "An $8/400km is better than any Volkswagon Jetta diesel. Also, there are no repairs and there are very minimal parts to look after."

The southwest has multiple charging stations - one in Shaunavon and one that was installed in Swift Current by Sun Country.
