There's been an outpouring of support by the community since Dorie's Youth Shelter Dorie's House announced yesterday it would close October 4.

But it remains to be seen whether they'll have enough fiscal support to make the closure only temporary.

Dorie's House opened in January and hasn't been able to secure government funding, but the private sector has helped.

Swift Current Boston Pizza announced it would continue directing funds raised from the Boston Pizza Foundation Future Prospects to the shelter for another year. Shaun Hanna is the owner for the restaurant in Swift and is on the board for Dorie's House.

"In terms of private-sector donations, BPs is actually quite a small player," he said. "You look at the trades community and what they did to get that house up."

Southwest YES - which runs Dorie's House - received donations of over $180,000 from the community, $840,000 worth of construction costs, and over 34,000 hours of labour.

Hanna said Swift Current Boston Pizza has donated approximately $5,500 to Dorie's house as well as food.

"The money that we raise - the money that we get as a business - that's not our money. It's the money that's been given to us. We have to give back."

Bob Hale is the chair of Dorie's House and president of Southwest YES, and said they've been told to focus on the provincial government when seeking public funds, as they fall under provincial jurisdiction in the Canadian Constitution.

Brad Wall - Saskatchewan premier and MLA for Swift Current - took to Facebook late Friday afternoon and said Southwest YES "was informed before they started construction that if they proceeded, they needed to do so knowing there was no guarantee, nor existing budget room, for their request for operating funds. That was made clear. Through Social Services, Saskatchewan does fund two youth homes in Swift Current with Fresh Start Program and Angel House, both of which have been operating before Dorie's House."

Wall said at the time that of eight spaces between Fresh Start Program and Angel House, five were currently open.
