The Town of Shaunavon will be installing a total of 39 new fire hydrants in the community.

This is thanks to $371,000 approved by Shaunavon Town Council in the 2021 budget, as well as a donation of $10,000 from TC Energy through their Build Strong Community Giving Program.

Ron Phillips is the Director of Operations for the Town of Shaunavon. He said, "So we have 39 sliding gate hydrants which is the old, old style. The problem we have with those ones is if we ever went to do another swabbing process, we can't use those hydrants to launch the swabs because the opening in the bottom is too small. So, we couldn't do as good a job as we wanted when we did the swabbing the last time, and, hopefully, this will make it so we can be more effective at cleaning the lines."

He also added that replacement parts for the old hydrants are unavailable.

The Town is hoping to begin installation of the new hydrants by the end of this summer, and residents will be notified when they will be without water for a short time.
