Saturday and Sunday on the south side of Swift Current was the 13th-annual Sask Power Windscape Kite Festival.

With temperatures in the low 20s on the weekend, and a bit of a breeze, the conditions were perfect for flying the kites and taking in the action.

Festival coordinator Shann Gowan said they had 6,500 people out Saturday and a lot on Sunday too - although it wasn't quite as busy during the second day.

"We had a great festival this year," she said. "I think we've had record people. Everything went really smoothly. We've had some great winds and had some fantastic kites up in the sky."

Celebrity kite flyers came from both sides of the Atlantic came to showcase their kites and talents.

"We have celebrity kite flyers from England - a full team of sport flyers from England - and we had several teams of guys from Germany, and we had one team that came from Belgium and all over the United States and Canada," said Gowan. "We partner with a festival in Quebec, so several of our international flyers went there first and then hang out in Toronto and then come here for our weekend."

There was also plenty of room for amateur kite flyers to take their crafts airborne one section field over from where the celebrity flyers were setting their kites airborne.

The festival began in 2005 with 30 celebrity flyers - all Canadian - and about 3,000 people in total went out to see the action that was then at the highland area of town.

"It's grown substantially from those beginnings, and I hope it continues to grow," said Gowan.

Also on the docket for the weekend were a couple of concerts. Nova Scotia's Joel Plaskett played some great rock cuts Saturday night and Leroy Stagger brought his alt-rock-country tunes before the crowd to cap things off yesterday.
