Crack a book at home and it could have a life-long impact for your kids.

Today is Family Literacy Day and Bula Ghosh of the Southwest Literacy Committee says parents have to do their part.

“We must remember that literacy begins in our homes, within our families, so the family is a child's first teacher. The profound influence that the family has on a child's life is widely recognized. We learn to speak. We learn so many other skills all at home.”

Ghosh says literacy at home is also about being more mindful and promoting life-long learning.

Great Plains College put on a family literacy evening last night and there are activities all throughout the day today at the Swift Current Mall.
