A construction project planned in Swift Current for earlier this month will now start tomorrow.

Steve Shaheen with the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure Communications Branch says that while the project had an initial start date of March 4, it was unable to begin until now.

"The contractor has advised us that the bridge on Highway One east of Swift Current, near the city limits, will be closed on Saturday, March 25 to begin work," he said. "Once the work begins, traffic restrictions will be in place until the project is scheduled to be completed at the end of June."

The construction will result in lane closures over the duration of the project.

"During the duration of construction, the eastbound lane of the Trans-Canada will be closed to allow bridge work to be completed, both east and westbound lanes will be down to one lane, and the traffic will be merged to the westbound lane of the Trans-Canada...as well, the project will result of the closure of the #4 highway entrance ramp onto highway one eastbound.

As well, there will be a width restriction of 4.3 metres. Shaheen advises all travelling on that route to drive safely and be aware of their surroundings.

"Check the Highway Hotline," he said. "This should put the bridge in place for the next fifty to seventy-five years. it doesn't last forever, so the work has to be done. Unfortunately there might be some inconvenience for short term for long term benefits."

He adds that the contractor may look at working longer hours and using larger crews to meet the original end date.
