The residents of Maple Creek will be heading to the polls shortly to determine the town's next mayor.

Michelle McKenzie, the current acting mayor, is one of the two candidates running for the position and she is up against Tina Cresswell.

Assistant Administrator with the Town of Maple Creek Kerrie Chabot said McKenzie was quick to step up after former Mayor Barry Rudd stepped down.

"She has done a wonderful job," she said. "She stepped up to the position immediately and has been filling the role of mayor just wonderfully."

If McKenzie is elected on September 12 that would force another byelection for the town as she was previously serving as a councillor.

"We're going to have our byelection for mayor and then once that's complete we will see who's mayor," Chabot explained. "If Michelle is not the mayor she can go back into her councillor seat and if she becomes the mayor then we have to have another byelection following this one, and we will be having an election for a councillor."

Rudd stepped down from the post back on May 15 of this year and according to Chabot didn't explain to the Town why he made the decision.

"He didn't give us a reason, he just resigned," she said. "I don't think there were any hard feelings."

The advance poll will be held on August 30 at the Southwest Integrated Healthcare Facility from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Maple Creek Armoury will house voting on byelection day, and the polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
