U of R President Visits Maverick School

University of Regina President Vianne Timmons talks with Maverick student Sarah Houghtaling during a tour of the school on Thursday.

The president of the University of Regina was in Swift Current this past week.

Not only was Vianne Timmons in the city to announce a new four-year nursing program at Great Plains College, but she also made a stop at Swift Current's Maverick School.

"We place our student-teachers all over the province who are interested in giving the students who graduate from Maverick an opportunity to learn about the University of Regina, and we're looking at potential partnerships with the administration here," Timmons said.

Timmons took a tour of the facility and talked with some of the students, including Sarah Houghtaling. She said, "everyone was really open to asking questions and discussing how it works here, and I think it just went really well."

Maverick is known locally for its unique approach to high school education, and Timmons says it's something the University can learn from: "I think that this school has done some innovative things about keeping learners in school. We are interested in that and we are always interested in students' success, so we think we can learn from Maverick and the things they've done here, and the potential that they might learn from us too."

"Maverick has been the biggest difference in my life since being born," Sarah added. "I had huge depression issues, and then I got here and people embraced my differences instead of disregarding them, and now I am way happier."
