Last night the Community Baptist Church was the home to a performance from the Sawuti Children's Choir.

The choir consists of seven kids ranging in age from eight to 15 who are from Uganda. The kids have been performing across Canada on their tour called 'Sing Together One Voice' and have been partnering with Return Ministries and Seven Wells Ministries.

Joell Haugan, the pastor of the Community Baptist Church, said that the event went great.

"They started off with a very loud and exciting drum piece which was excellent and got us all juiced up for the evening," he said. "It was a great performance by the kids overall. Very energetic and we were very enthused to have them give our stage a good workout."

Christopher Spark is one of the chaperones for the choir and said that the goal is to raise awareness for orphans and other vulnerable children.

"It's about trying to help the whole education process for the African children," he said. "The schooling is free but to go to school you have to pay for the uniform, you have to pay for the books, and there are other expenses as well. It's why we are looking for sponsorships for the children."

Haugan said that they jumped at the opportunity to be able to raise awareness for children in need.

"We are so far away from places that are sort of in trouble, and a lot of times you're always afraid that if you are giving towards something and your not sure if your effectively making a difference," he said. "A child sponsorship in general, is fairly effective to make sure that you are making a difference in at least in one person's life, and when you are dealing with folks that are either from orphanages or extremely low-income families, that one sponsorship can make a difference to the child him or herself, or the family."

The choir has already stopped in Winnipeg, Regina, and other places as well. They are set to perform 100 shows overall with their next stop in Maple Creek tonight.
