Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall and his western counterparts are asking Ottawa for more control of immigration.

"We're prepared to do more by way of administration in terms of the immigration program and if they'll raise caps that currently exist in provinces," Wall said. "What the Premier of BC [Christy Clark] is communicating is really a New West Partnership position of Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC. We want more control of immigration, we have growing economies and we need people."

As far as bringing more people into the province, Wall says Saskatchewan has already made significant progress: "When we took office, our immigration numbers were quite low. The numbers between 2001 and 2006 in the province in immigration, in that five-year period, we'll eclipse that just this year by really investing in the immigration program and by developing a good relationship with Ottawa."

The Premier was recently part of a trip to Ireland to recruit workers for the province.
