Premier Brad Wall is hoping Saskatchewan will get some luck of the Irish.

Wall and a large contingent from Saskatchewan recently visited a job fair in Ireland to help recruit for the province's labour shortage.

He said it was tough to see how many people in the country were struggling.

“There was hope offered inside by Saskatchewan employers including great employers Swift Current's own (Jay Dee Ag Tech) who were there with jobs for heavy duty mechanics and those in construction," Wall said. "We had healthcare providers looking for healthcare workers, nurses doctors, professions, there was much to offer”

Recruiting is only part of a strategy that starts with offering better training to people already here and bringing former residents of Saskatchewan home.

Wall added that a low unemployment rate but a dipping labour force in Swift Current and Moose Jaw is an example of why the province needs to take these kinds of steps.

“Here we have a low unemployment rate and yet the number of people working is not necesarilly increasing as people expect not because there are the jobs but because alot of  jobs are going unfilled so we do need to recruit." said Wall. "It's not an either or proposition. We've got to do all of these things to meet the labour shortages in the short and long term.”
