The War Amps of Canada kicked off their annual distribution of key tags last week.

This year's campaign for Saskatchewan started on May 14 and is made a little more special as this year marks War Amps 100th anniversary.

James Jordan is the safety events coordinator with the War Amps of Canada and said that this year's campaign has gone really well.

Jordan said that this service is important to War Amps as it's their main source of funding to go along with the donations they receive from the Canadian public.

"We generate most of the donations from our organization through our key tag service and that's how we generate most of the funds for the programs that we offer for our amputees across the country," he said. "Mainly financial assistance for artificial assistance, but also emotional assistance for amputees. It really does go a long way and it helps a lot of individuals across the country."

The key tag service originally started back in 1946 when the War Amps needed funds.

"It was the first and second world war amputees that started the War Amps of Canada," he said. "Soon after the second world war the association grew even larger and they needed to find a way to provide funding for their programs for artificial limbs, for the rehabilitation and for the other programs that they offered as well as emotional assistance. What they did is they started this lost key return service, which is the largest at your honour service, I believe in Canada. It's all thanks to them."

The key tag service is a free lost key return service that has returned over 1.5 million sets of keys back to their owners over its 70 years.

Jordan added that he knows personally how important the funding War Amps receives from the key tags can be.

"I was born missing my left arm below the elbow and the War Amps were there every step of my life," he said. "I benefited from their support. Just giving me an arm for whatever activity I wanted to play or do and keep up with my friends and it's like that with my amputees across Canada, giving them a leg to stand on, an arm to grab with. It's there for these amputees and it really is all thanks to the key tag service, so that will be why it's so important."

Jordan said that if you want to order or have ordered a key tag and didn't receive it to contact War Amps either online or over the phone.
