Well no record for Swift Current yesterday in terms of temperatures, but it still was well above the seasonal average.

Swift Current hit 6.9 degrees yesterday falling just short of January 18th record that was set last year at 7.3 degrees.

John Paul Cragg, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada, said it's a bit of a fluke that January 18th for the past two years has been so warm.

"It is a little bit odd that two years in a row January 18 broke some records, but that is probably just a coincidence," he said.

One town in the southwest that did knock off their previous high was Maple Creek hitting 10.9 degrees making it the provincial hotspot yesterday breaking their record from 2014 of 10.1 degrees.

Cragg noted the big time warm up was caused by a system from the Pacific, this time from the United States.

"It's common to get above zero in the winter, even in January - the coldest month of the year," he explained. "But it's not common to see temperatures getting close to 10 degrees."

Moving forward Cragg believes the seasonal temperatures will stick around for a few more days before the cold arctic air funnels back down into the province.
