It was certainly toasty outside the last few days in the southwest but not warm enough to break any heat records.

Tuesday warmed up to 29.8 C and Wednesday reached 29.4 C, but the records for those days were 33 C and 32.2 C respectively.

John Paul Cragg, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said it's pretty rare for it to be over 30 C in mid May.

"In the past temperatures have gotten over 30 C, you guys in Swift Current got very close, but not over that 30 C mark," he said. "But it was a lot warmer than average for this time of year in the southwest corner of the province and across the province in general."

The warmer-than-normal weather was caused by a few things Cragg said.

"Bright sunny sky for one," he explained. "We had a ridge of high pressure that cleared away the clouds and allowed the sun to do its work. The sun's high in the sky this time of year and things can really warm up when the clouds move away. We also had a nice flow from the south; southerly winds bring in warmer air."

Average temperatures for Swift Current in mid-May feature daytime highs of 19 C and lows of 5 C.

As for precipitation, Swift Current has only received 15 millimetres so far this month and the average is 51 mm.
