While the Swift Current Creek has seen increased water levels lately, Pete L'Heureux, Deputy Fire Chief with the City of Swift Current Fire Department, says the levels are fairly standard for this time of year.

"Recent conversation, as of this afternoon with the water treatment plant, Duncairn Dam has been releasing water into the system. Yesterday they released approx. 900 cubic feet per second"

L'Heureux says that that level has now receded to 600 per second, and already the flow of water has begun to slow.

"We are seeing a reduction in the water levels from yesterday afternoon, and those levels are going to continue to come down," he said. "We are seeing what the water treatment plant usually sees as an expected runoff and water volume, it just seems a little high right now."

Although the water levels will continue to slow down, L'Heureux says the Fire Department is still warning citizens to be aware of their surroundings when by the creek.

"We are, as always, encouraging people to give the water and the icebergs that are in it a wide birth, don't play on them, don't go out on the water, stay out of the water and away from it," he said.

Overall, he says, it’s important to use caution and common sense.

“We're encouraging people, if they want to be out and about, to not get too close, as far as slippery banks ice surfaces, the ice that's moving through is large and heavy and we don't want to have anyone close to it," he said.
