Last night the City of Swift Current was made aware of a water main leak causing icy conditions on city roads, and this morning work began to find the source.

Located near the corner of Yates Street and 6th Avenue North East, water was running down a hill near the corner creating the possibility for an icy patch of pavement.

Vicky Sutherland, superintendent of Water Works with the City of Swift Current said the on-call crews were able to stopped what she described as a massive leak.

"This one was a really big one. They [city employees] came out and they kind of isolated it by shutting off the water valves, and right now we're digging it just to dig down and repair whatever the break is on the pipe."

Sutherland said that the water to around eight houses was shut off to contain the leak.

Due to the cold temperatures in the area, Sutherland said that it might take them a while to determine the size of the break in the water main.

"It could be a long night for us. It really just depends on how well everything sort of comes together, if the ground is really frozen and hard to get through, that can make it longer, if it's hard to find exactly where the break is, sometimes the water comes through the frost, so we have to chase it a bit. There's a lot of variables."

Heavy machinery was on site early morning to begin digging to the pipe.

Sutherland said that due to the uncertainty of the size of the break at this point, the repair time and cost are unknown currently.
