With the warmer than average temperatures this month, roadways across the province have begun to soften once again.

As of yesterday, the weight decrease went into effect for secondary highways in Saskatchewan. Typically, these winter weights run from mid-November through mid-March, however this year, milder temperatures in November were not cold enough to warrant the start of the weight increase.

Steve Shaheen, Interactive and Social Media Consultant for the Government of Saskatchewan, shares that more changes are looming on the horizon.

"There are two different things going on: there's the removal of winter weights, and there's also spring road bans. This is one of the things that people need to keep an eye out for that will begin shortly," he said.

Shaheen explains the need for the road bans, which arrive closer to the spring season.

"Spring road bans are a tool the Province and the RMs have used for a number of decades to mitigate damage to infrastructure during this warming cycle," he said.

The Ministry of Highways will update their website every Tuesday and Friday to provide more information on weight restrictions. These updates will be provided until March 15th, 2017, at which time the winter weights will no longer be in effect for the entire province.
