The City of Swift Current will again be the host to a big event.

This time, it's the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, which features hockey players and fans from all over the world arriving in the City.

Swift Current is co-hosting the event with Medicine Hat and will be the home to Canada Red, Finland, Russia, and Sweden.

The first game of the tournament in Swift Current happens Saturday. Liam Choo-Foo, the co-chair of the host committee for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, said that the event is going to be really exciting.

"It seems like it's been quite a year in Swift Current with all the events we've had," he said. "We are winding it up by inviting the world to our community yet again," he said, "It's going to be lots of fun at the rink, so I encourage everyone to get out there."

Choo-Foo said that this is a chance for people to see the future of hockey.

"These are the best 16-year-olds in the world," he said. "People are familiar with the Swift Current Broncos captain in 2018 was Glenn Gawdin. He participated in this tournament. Ninety per cent of these kids that are going to be on the ice in front of us are going to get drafted into the NHL two years from now. It's pretty exciting, it's high-end hockey."

He noted that despite the busy year for volunteers in the City, they had no problem getting people to sign up.

"We've been planning for this event, sort of in the background of the summer games because that was such a major event this summer, but we've been going hard for about nine months trying to plan this event," Choo-Foo said. " With all the activity we've had going on in Swift Current, it really says a lot of our volunteer base that we had a waiting list of people that were ready to come out and help out for this tournament."

The first game that will be played at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex will see Canada Red take on Russia.
