Due to extremely dry conditions over the past summer, much of the southwest region was under a two week fire ban.

At the beginning of July, Swift Current Fire Chief, Denis Pilon detailed the regulations of the ban to the area.

“Any type of wood, fire pits that people have permits for those are shut down. The only thing they can burn is propane natural gas barbeques and cookers those types of things are allowed as well as charcoal barbeques.”

As regulated in the ban, residents were not allowed to have any open fires, garbage fires in pits or barrels, controlled burns or fireworks.

Swift Current was one of the last municipalities in the southwest to issue the ban due to our large green spaces.

Although some rain was received it was not enough and along with Swift Current the ban remained in effect for the surrounding RM's of Swift Current

Residents obeyed the ban and as a result no large fires were caused as Louis Cherpin, fire chief for the RM of Swift Current explained

“We have not had any significant fires since this fire ban has been stated. I would like to thank everyone for obeying the ban while were under severe drought in the southwest here.

The fire ban was eventually lifted on July 20th, 2015.
