Cypress Hills Candidates: Wayne Elhard, Bill Caton and Alex Mortensen

As voters in the Cypress Hills riding go to the polls today they are dealing with a choice between experience and new blood.

Incumbent Wayne Elhard is running for the Saskatchewan Party against 19-year-old Alex Mortensen for the NDP and Bill Caton of the Green Party. Elhard sees it as a clear choice.

"The Saskatchewan Party vision of moving the province forward and the NDP vision of returning to the old days of NDP rule" said Elhard.

Mortensen believes the Canadian Wheat Board, highways and health care are three main issues in the riding.

"I think hospitals need to be staying open instead of closing because there aren't enough doctors," Mortensen said. "I know there have been improvements to highways in the northern parts of the constituency, but I think we need to see the same improvements in the southern parts, especially close to the border."

Elhard defended the Saskatchewan Party's record.

"Our government has addressed highways more significantly in the past four years than has happened in generations," Elhard said. "In terms of health care there is still work to do. There have been improvements made but there is a substantive amount of work that needs to be done."

Elhard has been the MLA for Cypress Hills since 1999. He won in 2007 with 75.72% of the vote. Mortensen is a parachute candidate currently attending school in Regina. Caton runs a cattle ranch on the south side of Cypress Hills. The Green Party website describes him as a champion of small business, family farms, the wheat board, and progressive ideas.

Polls are open from 9:00am to 8:00pm. We will have a live election special tonight on Country Music Radio from 8:00pm to 10:00pm.
