The minor hockey season is winding down in the southwest, but a few teams are still in playoff action. The SWT Pee Wee Broncos captured the league title this past weekend and are getting set for provincials, while the Diamond Energy Female Midget Wildcats have a huge game 5 of their league semi-final against Prince Albert set for the Fairview Arenas on Wednesday night. But another local hockey team could get a championship of a different kind.
If you remember back to January and the first big event Swift Current hosted this year, the Initiation Penguins were featured during Rogers Hometown Hockey as the winner for their Cheer Like Never Before contest for the city's stop on the tour.
That win got them a step closer to the contest's grand prize, a once in a lifetime NHL experience in Vancouver on April 9. The winning team will take in the game between the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Arena, and will get to take part in the Canucks' game day skate, meet and greet players and alumni, receive new Bauer hockey equipment, and will get to perform their cheer in front of the Canucks inside their dressing room!
The Penguins will be pitted against the other teams that won from each of the Hometown Hockey stops this season in a final online vote from March 27 to April 1, and you can cast your vote at that time online at hometownhockey.com/contest.
