The countdown to Rogers Hometown Hockey in Swift Current is just about to wrap up! Crews moved into the downtown to set up along Central Ave N and at Market Square, and by the weekend it will be a massive hockey festival for hockey fans of all ages.
Nicole Spenst and Michael Boutilier from the City of Swift Current were in our studio this morning to get us set for the weekend's events.
For a complete schedule for the weekend, click here. Keep in mind, there will be traffic restrictions and street closures downtown through the weekend, but a shuttle bus will be running from the Credit Union iplex to the event site. You can also get details on that from the City's website.
One of the highlights of the event will be Ron MacLean broadcasting live from Swift Current during Sportsnet's telecast of the NHL game between the Washington Capitals and Ottawa Senators. Ron is not only an accomplished broadcaster but a best-selling author with his autobiography "Cornered", and his new book "Hockey Towns" which was released in 2015. He's also writing blog posts about the communities he is visiting, and he posted an entry about Swift Current today.
Ron will also be on hand for Sunday's Swift Current Broncos game against Moose Jaw where he will present the WHL's 50th Anniversary Season Alumni Achievement Award to former Bronco Sheldon Kennedy prior to face-off, and that game will also air live on Sportsnet.
