Magic 97 is saluting the beautiful community of Maple Creek today!

Maple Creek was established in the winter of 1883 as a settlement.  A number of railway crew workers set up a wintering camp to wait out the winter in Maple Creek; with families of Fort Walsh Officers joining them in early spring. In the spring of 1883 buildings and businesses sprung up and Maple Creek was born. One of those businesses was the Dixon Bros. General Store. John Dixon and brother boarded a train to Calgary, but the railway only went as far as Maple Creek.  They decided to buy a log cabin and set up shop. The general store was very successful and their business expanded many times. With the expansion of the railway and promise of cheap land many settlers came to live in Maple Creek. Therefore, the town grew quickly and by 1886, it was decided that the “village” was big enough to warrant an “overseer” Mr. J.J. English was elected to this position. In 1903, Maple Creek was incorporated as a town, and Mr. J. Dixon was elected its first mayor.

Maple Creek is also a short drive away from the Cypress Hills, which were used for hundreds of years as a wintering ground for the plains Indians, and historic Fort Walsh, which was built in 1875 as a barracks for the North West Mounted Police.

The community and surrounding area has a strong history, as well as a prosperous future ahead. The community recently opened a new hotel, the Cobble Creek Lodge, along Highway 21, and the new Southwest Integrated Healthcare Facility in June. The community has also been working to preserve its history and revitalize its downtown as one of the pilot communities in the Main Street Saskatchewan program.

Maple Creek is celebrating their Heritage Festival today with shopping, cultural displays, and entertainment for the whole family. Also today is a charity golf tournament hosted by Ottawa Senators forward and Maple Creek native Zack Smith, the rodeo parade downtown at 5:00pm, and the final performance of the Cowtown Pro Rodeo at the High Chapparal Arena at 7:00pm. There's also a lot of other events coming up in Maple Creek and surrounding area, including Taste of Maple Creek on August 15th, and the RCMP Musical Ride at Fort Walsh on July 21st.

Colin Powers will be broadcasting live from the Heritage Festival from 12:00 noon to 4:00pm, so stop by and help celebrate the community of Maple Creek!
