Our senior district curling championships were held in Maple Creek on Feb. 10/11. Thanks to Maple Creek Comp, commissioner Gaylene Senft and the crew at the rink for a great weekend! We had 6 boys, 7 girls and 7 mixed teams competing for the right to advance to SHSAA regional curling. Our winners were:

Girls:

A side – Maple Creek (skip – Janette Hoffman, 3rd – Morgan Ramsay, 2nd – Eve Maalerud, lead – Kristal Heinrichs).
B side – Maple Creek (skip – Emeri Palmier, 3nd – Rori Wenzel, 2nd – Keanna Bennett, lead – Hayley Campbell).

Boys:

A side – Swift Current Comp (skip – Grady Lamontagne, 3rd – Jesse Wallace-Perkins, 2nd – Tom Potts, lead – Jacob Menun)
B side – Fox Valley (skip – Spencer Kosolofski, 3rd – Austin Dirk, 2nd – Ethan Wiggins, lead – Wyatt Grant)

Mixed:

A side – Cabri (skip – Russell Green, 3rd – Taylor Stenerson, 2nd – Klarke Braaten, lead – Mariah Jacklin)
B side – Maple Creek Comp (skip – J.J. Burgess, 3rd – Shae-lyn Wenzel, 2nd – Landon Bertram, lead – Eden Palmier).

These teams will now play Feb. 17/18 at regionals. The girls and mixed teams compete in Rosetown, while the boys are at Beechy. Teams qualifying from there will head to provincials. Cabri School will host provincial mixed curling at Abbey rink on March 2/3.

Our senior basketball leagues have finished the regular season games. Shaunavon hosted Maple Creek on Feb. 7. The Silhouettes won a high scoring affair 85-63. Lacey Pritchard led the way for Shaunavon with 24 points and Becca Hanson added 17. Maple Creek’s Cassie Chabot had 22 points while Raelene Boschee added 18 pts in a losing cause. On the boys’ side, it was Shaunavon’s 6th straight win when they outscored the Rebels 89-46. Matt Benesh led the Shadows with 34 pts while Jesse Voll added 20. Markus Beveridge replied for Maple Creek with 12 pts.

Herbert hosted Frontier girls and Gull Lake boys on Feb. 7. The Frontier girls remained undefeated by beating the Laurels 53-47. Leading scorers for Frontier included Melissa Peacock (15 pts) and Sam Glenn (14 pts). Syd Seib scored 16 pts for the Laurels while Ricki Doyle contributed 10 pts. The Herbert boys posted a 91-29 win over Gull Lake. Layton Dueck and Jon Miller both had 20 pts to lead the way for Herbert. Dustin Cooke had 16 pts for Gull Lake.

The final league game of the season was a 83-44 win for Frontier over Maple Creek girls on Feb. 9. The Raiders remained undefeated in league play and had a perfect 6-0 record. Sam Glenn had 32 pts and Melissa Peacock had 20 for the Raiders. Annie He had 10 pts and Cassie Chabot 12 in a losing cause for Maple Creek.

Our senior basketball league semi finals will run before the February school break. In girls’ play, it will be #4 Swift Current Jr Ardens @ #1 Frontier while #3 Shaunavon will travel to #2 Herbert. On the boys’ side #4 Maple Creek will go to #1 Shaunavon while #3 Herbert will meet #2 Swift Current Jr Colts.

Our junior league has also finished. Final league scores were:

Swift Current Jr boys 87 @ Maple Creek 56
Shaunavon jr girls 39 @ Swift Current gr. 9’s 44
Shaunavon jr boys 45 @ Swift Current gr. 9’s 83
Waldeck boys 68 @ Maple creek 65.
