This week has been declared Bike Safety Week by the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute and the theme this year is "Ready To Ride."

Although the city of Swift Current is participating in the event, they are unable to hold their usually annual bike safety event at the park due to restrictions and so have come up with an innovative online solution as Val Choofoo, In Motion Community Facilitator with the city explains.

"What we have done is last week we had several of our first responders and the community come together and some volunteers and we created a video. And in that video, there are demonstrations of some of the important safety skills with regards to cycling. "

Choofoo says the video covers tips such as proper helmet fitting, bike inspection, and learning proper hand signals. As well as demonstrations on how to properly use all five of the bike courses located at all five of the city's outdoor rinks.

Choofoo details how children can enter to win some bike-related prizes.

"Post a photo or a video of their child practicing any of those bike safety skills. So maybe it's wearing a proper helmet, using their hand signals, or maybe they're out at a bike course practicing their skills. And if a parent or someone takes a photo or video and posts it on Swift Current Facebook or Twitter they'll have a chance to win some great prizes."

Prizes up for grabs this year include Swift Current Canadian Tire donating $175 towards a new bike, Pedal Works donating two free bike inspections and a variety of bike helmets as well.

Choofoo wishes to thank their sponsors and supporters including Swift Current Kiwanis Club who funds the bike safety event each year as well as SGI who they often get some prizes and grant money from.

The 15-minute video has now been produced and distributed to schools as well as the city's social media pages.
