Cowtown Christmas came alive in Maple Creek last week as the town closed down its main street and shops stayed open so residents could see a few celebrities, Santa Claus and Father Christmas. Volunteer firefighters stood watch by the burning barrels so shoppers and themselves could stay warm with very cold wind chills that night.  Cowtown Christmas has been around for close to 10 years. It has been a way for residents to be reminded of how the community used to celebrate Christmas. A time when horse drawn sleds brought farming families in from around the town to celebrate with the town folk. A time for community and friendship.

Thursday, Dec 8th saw that time-honored tradition revived as Kevin Rittenger, a new councilor to the town explains. He said, “Well I think the highlight for everybody is just getting together and visiting. Down at the Glasscock Centre, they always have hot dogs happening there and they have crafts happening. So it’s just a really great night for the families to get out and spend some time together and visit with their friends in the community. There’s just a lot of well wishing going on throughout the Christmas season and it’s really the kickoff to Christmas here in Maple Creek.”
