Youth can experience living in the olden times this summer by attending one of the Doc's Town kid's day camps taking place throughout August.

Samantha James, Doc's Town Special Events Coordinator details some of the fun activities taking place.

"I have some alpaca's coming in that the kids will be able to pet and feed. I have a scavenger hunt planned, I have the tea room ladies to help them bake pies and make sundaes. They are going to be doing some older prairie activities like making butter, learning how to wash clothes, and learning how to milk a fake cow named Betsy."

James says the idea of the camps is to give kids an opportunity to be introduced to Doc's Town and maybe make up for some missed opportunities this year in school due to the pandemic restrictions. She is a summer student and she began her position during the pandemic and realized that a lot of kids' events were getting canceled so she tried to come up with ideas for the kids to get involved such as the camps.

She details her motivation behind creating the day camps.

"I am going to the University of Regina and I am an education student kindergarten to grade five, so this kind of stuff was really important to me and I remembered really loving all of the Doc's Town stuff when I was a kid. I was kind of sad that kids were going to be missing out on this opportunity so when I learned that I could spearhead something like this it was just a really amazing opportunity for me."

While the August 5th date is already full, camps will also be taking place on August 11th, 20th, and 25th from 1:00-5:00 pm each day. Camps will be split into two age groups from 6-10 years of age and 11-14 years of age. James said she has tried to cater to the interests of the older youth by splitting the age groups into two and both groups will be doing different activities throughout the day.

James was surprised by the great response she has received so far from the community so far and is pleased with all the excitement from parents and youth.

James says they will be staggering the release dates to register for the day camps and more information will be up soon here and the Doc's Town Facebook page.
